The Ana Boot Camp is a 50-day near starvation diet of uncertain origins that is passed around on internet forums.
Categorized under: Ana Diets, Calorie Shifting Diets, Eating Disorders, Extreme Diets, Fad and Crank Diets, Fasting, Folk Diets, Low Calorie Diets
The Ana Boot Camp (or ABC Diet, not to be confused with Robert S. Wieder's ABC Diet) is an internet diet meme passed around on forums devoted to pro ana (pro anorexia, a movement promoting anorexia as an alternative lifestyle rather than a disease).
The Ana Boot Camp Diet is a simple 50-day schedule listing the number of calories that the dieter is advised to eat. Calorie levels range from zero to 500 calories (one day only lists 800 calories), in an apparently random pattern.
| Week | Mon | Tues | Wed | Thurs | Fri | Sat | Sun |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 500 | 500 | 300 | 400 | 100 | 200 | 300 |
| Week 2 | 400 | 500 | Fast | 150 | 200 | 400 | 350 |
| Week 3 | 250 | 200 | Fast | 200 | 100 | Fast | 300 |
| Week 4 | 250 | 200 | 150 | 100 | 50 | 100 | 200 |
| Week 5 | 200 | 300 | 800 | Fast | 250 | 350 | 450 |
| Week 6 | Fast | 500 | 450 | 400 | 350 | 300 | 250 |
| Week 7 | 200 | 200 | 250 | 200 | 300 | 200 | 150 |
| Week 8 | Fast | Slowly return to a normal diet | |||||
Ana Boot Camp supplies very few calories, only a fraction of the calories even than the Master Cleanse, which is considered by many to be a virtual fast. And the Ana Boot Camp is 50 days long, whereas most Master Cleansers don't continue for longer than 10 or 12 days. Thus the Ana Boot Camp diet is potentially extremely dangerous.
The diet is based on the concept of calorie shifting, a dieting theory born from the idea that when you reduce your food intake suddenly, your body shifts into "starvation mode," an evolutionary defense mechanism in which your body's metabolism becomes more efficient in order to cope with an expected shortage of food. By varying the number of calories each day you presumably trick the body into not realizing that it is being confronted with a shortage of food, thus preventing starvation mode.
The concept of "starvation mode" as applied to dieting is a myth. Although there is a grain of truth underlying the idea, the degree of efficiency that your body can achieve during a weight loss diet does not materially affect your rate of weight loss.
And in the case of the Ana Boot Camp, it's preposterous to think that your body would interpret days of 400 or 500 calories as "feast days" that would counter days of 100 or 200 calories. Every day of the Ana Boot Camp diet is a fast day.
The Ana Boot Camp diet will cause you to lose weight not through any metabolic hacks, but rather through simple lack of food. And it will do so at the risk of the dangerous side effects of long-term fasting, including loss of heart muscle.
Ana Boot Camp is sometimes called ABC Diet, Pro Ana ABC Diet, Ana Diet, and is sometimes misspelled Anna Boot Camp, Ana Bootcamp, Anna Bootcamp, ABC Dieten.
It was very hard, but I did this diet 3 months ago, I lost over 60 pounds! And I have been keeping it off fine, I reccomend taking Green Tea pills, as they boost your metabolism and help you burn more fat. Also use your calories on Protein and take vitamins, drink 6 glasses of water a day and you should be fine! Trying it again tomorrow, Good luck everyone!
Having my exams soon but i'm pressured at the fact that i'm still fat i've tried every diet but i'd end up binging. I'll try this and give my rating. Hope it'll work :')
I did this diet when I was 17/18 but only lasted 2 weeks. Now, I was super fat. I always have been (spoilt by grandparents) and then had enough. Now, in those 2 weeks I lost 13lb. In 2 weeks!! I was so happy but at a cost! I couldn't even hold a conversation together I was so tired and worn out. I was on the 4th floor at college and It wore me out for the rest of the day just getting to my class. When I started eating again I did put the weight back on but not as fast as expected since I went exactly back to what I ate before. I'd love to do this diet again because the results don't lie, but I'm an adult and have a job I need to keep so I need to be focused... Not turning into a vegetable just to lose a few lbs
So im beyond confused some say it works some totally without any hesitatin say dont do it but yet they r hear for something... I have struggled with my weight ALLL my life I hadnt stepped on a scale for over a year until today last weight check was 209 which was doable ffor me but then I fell in to a scary depression today I am 284 my lowest ever was 117 I dont want to be tht small because I looked sick to be honest I would be content at 140-155. I am at a loss of what to do, I think i am going to try this as just a information trial haha HELPPP Ineed to get healthy my children (4) Only have me and the rate I am going they ont for much longer
I'm tired of the weight loss merry-go-round and am excited to start this diet!
So for the last 2 years I've been doing weights and working out non-stop! I started this to try and get my eating disorder under control, I was sick of counting calories and fasting all the time! I love food and I want to eat as much as I can, all the time! But I'm uncomfortable with the amount I weigh! Now I know its mostly muscle, but I don't like not being able to fit in my favorite dresses and stuff! So I'm not going to stop my amount of exercise or even reduce it! But I am going to give this diet my whole! I'd love someone to do this with tho! It would sure make it easier and help keep me motivated! :)
Almost nobody can possibly stick to this diet becasue it is too extreme. Triple every number and you still have a really hard core diet that will produce results without risking your health.
thanks for this. trying tomorrow
i am 120 lbs an I am 5'2 I want to lose 25 lbs starting the boot camp diet tomorrow
I'm on week 3 and I have already lost 22 pounds! Just make sure to get your protein and use your calories on healthy food, I am feeling great! This diet is not bad at all!
I am physically sick after reading the specifics of this diet. The damage you will do to your body can't be put into words. Every female I train eats a minimum of 1,200 calories a day and each sees incredible results. Hire an expert immediately if you have any thought, any thoughts at all, of trying this diet.

I tried this diet about three times. The first time, I lost 10lbs (Starting weight: 118, Ending weight: About 108 and I'm 5'0") but I messed it up halfway through. I tried it again and binged after week 2, the third time I tried it, I ended up in the emergency room. I'm now 92lbs and I'm starting the ABC Diet again to reach my goal weight: 80lbs.
I don't recommend this diet, it made me very sick. I love at the end it says "slowly return to normal diet". That is so wrong because your mind will be damaged forever.
This diet is a trap.
I'm a guy. 6 foot tall and overweight (probably obese)
I was wondering will this diet work just as well with a guy?

Guess I'll find out this month.
Is my first time doing this diet I am 146.8 lbs and 5'7. I want to be 120lb! I will start tomorrow I have all my energy to lose this weight I hate it!!!!!
What does fast mean? im sorry im new too this
I'm starting today. I'm 5'9", 132lbs. Fed up with my fat... Hope it will work out!
I am going to start this today. I weigh 156 and I'm 5'7. Hoping to lose 30 pounds. I hope this works.
I tried this on 2013 and I lost about 44 pounds, I also did excersise, so yeah, it's really hard to keep it up and when you're done its hard to go back to normal but I'll do it again darting tomorrow.
I feel like cutting down calories is a good idea. And i think if you're really smart about it and know how the human digestive tract works you'll know that you should eat fruits and veggies. Don't count those. Make sure ur consuming a form of protein. Protein is a fat burner and will give u energy. Drink tea as it makes u feel full. Drink cold water to boost ur metabolism. drink a little soy milk. And make sure girls that ur consuming yogurt with probiotics. Its so important for ur feminine parts. Ur body is striving to get as many nutrients as it can while ur cutting way back on ur calories. Its ok to go over the calories if its healthy. Aka fruits, veggies, greek yogurt. Be strict. But please, u lovely peoples out there, be good to ur bodies. Ur bodies dont mean to be difficult or stubborn. This diet worked really well for me but i did the things im suggesting for u. I was 192 pounds im 5'5" and now i am 125 pounds. I feel really good. I also take one a day vitamins. Theyre crucial to ur system. Good luck. 💚💋
This diet is so horrible. No one should do this diet it is extremely unhealthy! You can loose weight healthily by cutting out the bad stuff with a few cheat days every now and plenty of exercise and then not by starving yourself for 50 days! Please don't try this. Get help please! I struggled with my body weight for 6 1/2 years. I was extremely unhappy with the way I looked and it took over my life. I never once thought of starving myself or cutting or making myself throw up because I wouldn't let myself think that I needed to do that so I ate really healthy and I exercised a lot and I lost a lot of weight and got toned. I also began to talk to people about what I thought about myself and they helped me accept myself. Be healthy, not unhealthy. The image of how people should look nowadays is not realistic for everyone. Accept how you are and if you want to make a difference do it by eating healthy and exercising. Please do not do this please please please. You ALL are perfect and beautiful
Going to start this Monday

Would be great to have a friend to do this with for motivation :)
I did something like this for a couple weeks and saw great results but you have to stick with it I'm very fat now cause I stay home all the time but I'm starting again tomorrow
I followed this diet to a tee and in the 50 day period I lost 50lbs. I went from 185 lbs to 135 lbs, but as soon as I tried to go back to eating normal, all I could do was binge. I am now a whopping 60 lbs up from my lowest weight about a year after finishing the diet and now have a binge problem. Be prepared to have psychological difficulty in going from this restricting diet to trying to eat normally again.
my review was 4 stars not 1. it messed up.
I would give it 5 for effectiveness but I did 4 because you do not need to take the calories this low for it to work. Heck add 200 a day to the numbers or double them and you will still lose a ton if you are overweight
You don't need to follow this to the letter. You will lose even doing 500 day and every 4th day going up to 800 or 900 cal (to kick metabolism) or doing 2468. Its all the same. It is just restriction.
You will be fine if you are overweight. Gastric bypass patients are probably the unhealthiest group out and they eat this little plus they had major surgery!. People on reality shows like Survivor eat this little for a 6 weeks and handle it. It is only dangerous if you are underweight or have a health condition.
If low cal is too had for you try alternate day fasting. It was the best diet I ever did. I ate anything I wanted one day and fasted the next. I kept doing the alternate day fasting..You can even eat up to 300 cal on the starve day as long as you burn it off. Works like a charm. Its a metabolism tricker. Read up on the benefits of alternate day fasting and see what I am talking about. It becomes so easy to resit eating on fast day when you know tomorrow you can have it. I lost 30lbs in 6 weeks doing it.
You do not put weight back on after diets if you maintain better eating habits and begin exercising. By that point the goal is maintaining which is easier to do. Weigh weekly and if you go up a pound eat light for one day and take it back off. 2 lbs..2 days of diet.. Simple.
6 weeks is not going to destroy a metabolism forever. That is a myth. Long long term dieting maybe, but a few months. The only real concern is not becoming eating disordered by obsessing too much on calories and weight. Alternate day fasting saved me from that though. Taught me to eat to live and not live to eat.
I will admit to having done this diet before, but I am a perfectionist. If I go over a little bit, I automatically restart. I've probably spent the most time consuming around 500 calories/day and I ended up going from 180 down to 98. Now I have gained weight again from stress and medication issues (I am like 140?), and I will be starting again tomorrow...
This is my 4th time doing this diet. I completed it twice and lost 20lbs each time. I have gained a lot due a six month hospital admission, but I am going back onto this diet starting today with a friend. I love it!
I am on day 9 (today) and I started this diet at 162. I am so excited to say I now weighed myself yesterday and have already lost 10 pounds. I can't believe I finally found something that works. It takes a lot of willpower. You have to be strong, but trust me it works. I haven't done much hardcore exercising either. I walk about 20-30 mins a day, sometimes a little more, but that's it. I wanna start jogging or something. I think that will help the weight come off even faster. My daily meals consist of egg whites, fruits and veggies. The occasional lowfat treat once in awhile when I'm really craving something sweet lol, so happy this is working for me. Also, people shouldn't judge because everyone is different and you should be able to look in the mirror and be happy with how u look. If u aren't then make a change. Will update further down the road. Good luck everyone!!!!
This is the best diet I've ever been on! I was on it in December of 2013 and lost 30lbs! I want to lose some weight, I wish I would have started it earlier. What's done is done, but in on day six and have already lost 8lbs! :D
Yes this diet does work and no you won't gain it all back. I was obese 220lbs. Last year after multiple failed attempts to diet I turned to laxitiives in desperation. These worked very well I lost 20 lbs in a month without really doing anything else. The key is to take off days on with those so you don't need more and more.
Then I was hired to be for a new joband knew that laxitiives wouldn't really be feasible because the lax will make you go all the time and my new job prevented me from having Access to a bathroom all the time. So I turned to abc. The prior weight loss gave me the motivation to stick to the abc. I stuck out the whole 50 days and lost 37 more lbs. It was hard but worth it. I slowly went back to a normal diet. When I say slowly I mean I took about 2 months before I began eating over 1000 calories. It's been a year and I have maintained my weight and not put a lb back on. I am going for another round and hope to hit my goal weight this time. Yes this is unhealthy but for some of us this is the only way it works and I would rather spend a few months being unhealthy than to remain overweight for years because being overweight isn't healthy either. Good luck girls!!!
Day One had 2 Chobani Cherry Yogurts 130 Calories Each a 5 Hour Energy has 4 Calories and Large Coffee This Morning with Cream and Splenda. Gonna Cut our the Cream Tomorrow. I might have 1 more yogurt today. This will keep me right under 500 for day one
This is a stupid diet. Theres a lot of shallow people out there, aren't there? People buying into this crap and not taking care of their body is retarded!!!
day 4, 4 lbs gone :)
From comments I've seen it looks like this diet is really effective, am definitely going to start this and lose the weight I've wanted to lose for so long !
Day two and I'm already down three lbs. I'm doing at least an hour of cardio and trying to stay under the calorie count. Aiming for all 50 days I'll keep you guys updated
Through my 20's I lived on 500 calories a day and I stayed thin. I popped a couple of kids out and now I'm in 170lbs. I'm ready to get back to this and so tomorrow I start the boot camp! Wish me luck I'm hoping by the end of the boot camp to be low 150's if not less. Then going further of course from there.
Started two days ago hopefully it works. Wanna loose 30 lbs by may an currently 126lb wanna be in the 90s
Im goi.v to start thid diet tom..any tips would be helpful.I weigh 145lbs.I feel so fat..
I'm 5'11 (186cm to b exact) and I weight 150.5lbs. My starting weight was 160 (the heaviest ive ever been) and I want to go down to at least 130lbs after this diet.
To everyone, its important to take vitamins and supplements!
Stay strong and get beautiful
I weight 136, 5'2 and thick. I'm scared, honestly but I want to give it a try. I have pretty thick legs and stomach and hope to see some changes. I hope it works out well!
So, Hi I'm about 5'3 and well scared to really look at how much I weigh but I pretty sure I'm just about 125ish. My BF said my body is fine but everytime I lose weigh, it's like he loves my body even more sooo He will not know I'm starting this die thing again, He hates it. he said is't no good and it's bad for you and said I need to get better or me and him are over. that's how I got here.
i SERIOUSLY!! need to LOSE!! 70 pounds in 3 MONTHS... iv'e tried everything now the only thing i can think of is THE ANA DIET! but i don't know how much i should eat a day in order to lose 70 pounds in that amount of time.
Started this diet yesterday (went under the max of 500 calories, only eating like 300 - yes!) so I am into Day 2. I currently weigh 129lbs and hope to get down to my goal weight of 90lbs. Here's hoping I can keep up the hard work for 50 days.
This is a horrible, unhealthy diet. However, if I had a friend in the real world to partake, oh hellz yeah
TRYING THIS! I attepted it last year and lost 7 lbs in the first week!
I'm 5'5ft (165 cm) and currently weigh 115lbs (52kg). I'm gonna try this 50-day diet for fun.
In mid dec 2012, I was 119lbs (54kgs) and started a diet plan. Then in early feb 2014, i went down to 95lbs (43kg). Yup, 22lbs (10kgs!) in 1 month+!! No exercise/work out - just purely diet. I was skinny til the point that i could not wear a S size dress as it was too loose. I had to buy new clothes that were XS. After a few months i began to eat normally. Now I seriously feel "fat/obese". I know i'm not fat, but it's a mental effect thingy. I so miss that "slim-old-me". Oh well...
And so, I'm gonna try out this 50-day diet and go down to at least 2 dress sizes. (X'MAS is coming~!) Yup, that's my goal. Nope - I don't wanna die(yet) as i do know how to trick my body - thinking that it is receiving food and preventing my body from shutting down or turned into starvation mode.
Good luck, to all u beautiful!
P.S: If u ever feel dizzy, groggy, blurry/black vision, pls STOP right away! That means your body is shutting itself down. When it does, down some sweet stuff like a fruit bar, chocs or have some fruit juice.
Ok, now let the 'FUN' begin!
ok, so i have started today and am around 145 and hope to loose 10lb as my short term goal, can wait to see some results!!
Starting today at 5'2" ~ 157 lbs. :( I'd like to not be a hippo this Christmas/New Years. I'd at least settle for being a somewhat smaller hippo.
I tried this and i believe i lost 3 pounds in 3 days. I quit though cause i was kinda a derp back then...
I think it really works well just keep at it :D
